This happens just often enough to be really annoying but not enough to convince tech support of a real hardware failure.

Windows 8 On Dell XPS M1530 (Download All Drivers) 64 Bit

I've done a little googling on this and it seems there are a host of pointer issues affecting the Alps touchpad used in m1503 system, and in other notebooks as well. I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find a Dell or Alps Windows 8 driver. On the Recording tab, set the volume for the microphone.

But I tried to download them and it appears all the links are bad. I am running Windows 8 64bit.

I'd recommend removing the ALPS drivers and then install the synaptics.
